Bayou Angoras

We are located in Tensas Parish, near the small village of Waterproof, Louisiana. Our herd of registered Colored Angora goats produce superior mohair, which is sold raw, hand-washed, or made into batts on our drum carder. At present, our fleece colors range from copper-red to silver to off-white.

Overall, mohair fleece is prized for its exceptional softness, luster, and versatility. Its natural properties make mohair a desirable choice for creating high-quality and gorgeous textile products. We take great pride in raising our herd, and strive to produce the highest quality mohair available on the market.

Our animals are well-maintained, as we follow a quality health and nutrition program. I am directly involved in each step of producing the fiber, so I daily check for quality and well-being of the animals. I personally shear my goats and rabbits.

The mohair is then hand washed, removing all debris and vegetable matter in the fiber. The mohair can also be blended with wool from our Angora rabbits to create soft batts for spinning extremely comfortable yarn.

Being a part of our animals lives on a daily basis is what makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Our Angora RABBITS

Our rabbits are fed a high-protein pelleted ration, along with good quality hay and fresh vegetables. They love cabbage, lettuces, apples, cilantro, and carrots. We try to grow our own veggies, but often run out of time! Their favorite treat (limited) is fig newtons!!

Our rabbits are never brushed. We blow the fiber at least once a week, while checking for mats and trimming nails. The fiber is sold raw, carded into batts, or blended with our mohair. The fiber is harvested every three to four months or when their fiber is between 4 and 5 inches long.

We do not wash the fiber, as they stay very clean, and are blown out weekly.
